Intronic is a collaboration between ZM (“Intron 19”) and Helene (“Intron 8”), which considers interruption as a method to engage with and pause prevalent systems. The story of Intronic could be told as that of the biological concept of the “intron”: Introns, once regarded as “non-coding,” as interruptions in gene-coding segments, as worthless space, are now viewed as active sites of diversity and regulation. “Intronic” as a position within systems, the space between functions, the interval between signals, the interruption within a seemingly continuous process, reflects our curiosity with what these interstices reveal: between human and machine, organisms and technologies, information and matter, intention and emergence, where all systems lose their boundaries. In this sense, we consider interruption as both method (strategy) and evidence (outcome) as well as a space for possibilities, an interval in which focus of attention shifts and certainties are deferred. By working with, around, and against technology, we explore the various interfaces, the thresholds, where biological, computer-based, social, and cultural processes intersect.
INTERRUPTIONS
We view interruption as a productive force that is both strategic and contingent. Like the intron within a genetic sequence, an interruption can give rise to differences, adaptations, and new forms of relationship. We work within these interstitial zones and explore how systems reveal themselves when they are disrupted, reconfigured, or viewed from unexpected perspectives.
And yes, keeping it real, we interrupt each other a lot too.
